Kayla Kowalik Named SEC Freshman of the Week For Second Time

by Chris Shoals

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Freshman Kayla Kowalik was named the Southeastern Conference’s Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon. It is Kowalik’s second Freshman of the Week honor after winning the weekly award two weeks ago for her performance at the Coach B Classic.

Kowalik helped lead the Kentucky Wildcats to a 5-0 week with three wins over Mississippi State and midweek defeats over Miami and Syracuse. The New Braunsfels, Texas native hit .500 on the week going 7-for-14 with eight runs scored, two doubles and a triple.

Her team-leading fourth triple of the season came in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game with Mississippi State after UK trailed by as many as six runs. She then came around to score the eventual game-winning and series-clinching run as Kentucky went on to win, 9-8.

Kowalik had four RBI on the weekend and reached base safely in 11 of her 14 plate appearances in week six of the season.

Kentucky faces Marshall on Wednesday afternoon in Huntington, W. Va., for its only midweek contest of the week before hosting Missouri for a three-game series at John Cropp Stadium over the weekend. Saturday is Bark in the Park at 2 p.m. ET vs. the Tigers as fans are encouraged to bring their four-legged friends with them to the game.
