Kentucky Dominates Cincinnati on Senior Day
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky swimming and diving program ended its regular season on a high note, posting impressive wins over Cincinnati for Senior Day. The men’s team defeated the Bearcats, 207-91, while the women’s team won, 201-89.
“It was a great day to recognize our seniors,” said Kentucky head coach Lars Jorgensen. “It was a lot of fun. Our senior captains Bridgette Alexander, Morgan Belli, Isaac Jones were all phenomenal in leading the charge today. It was a great day overall. We’ve got to be a lot better in a couple weeks and hopefully we will.”
The Kentucky women’s team posted a first-place finish in all but one event in the outing, while the men’s team won all but two.
The Wildcats got off to a strong start as the women posted a 1-2-3 sweep in the 400 medley relay. The men’s team followed that with a 1-2 finish of its own in the relay.
On the women’s side, senior Bridgette Alexander turned in two top finishes for UK. Alexander touched the wall in 54.66 to win the 100-yard backstroke before winning the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.09.
Fellow senior Morgan Belli had a pair of wins of her own, sweeping the women’s breaststroke events. Belli recorded a time of 1:03.05 to win the 100 breaststroke, while she posted a 2:16.82 to take the 200 breast title.
Kentucky swept both the men’s and women’s diving events, as sophomores Emma Dellmore and Kevin Frebel won both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events.
Senior Isaac Jones picked up a duo of victories for the men’s team. Jones won the 200 free in 1:37.53, leading Jason Head, Peter Wetzlar and John Mitchell in a 1-2-3-4 finish for the Wildcats. Jones also led Kentucky in a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 400 individual medley.
Junior Matthew Beach swept the butterfly events for the men’s team, winning the 200 fly with a time of 1:48.78 before taking the 100 fly in 49.35.
The Wildcats will have a few weeks break before heading to College Station, Texas, for the Southeastern Conference Championships from Feb. 14-18.
