No. 18/17 Kentucky Travels to Chattanooga Frost Classic
LEXINGTON, Ky. –The No. 18/17 Kentucky softball team heads to
Chattanooga to compete in the 2016 Chattanooga Classic hosted by University of
Tennessee at Chattanooga beginning on Friday and concluding on Sunday afternoon
in the Volunteer state. The Wildcats will play five games over a three-day
stretch against Lipscomb, Miami (OH), Eastern Illinois, Chattanooga and
Evansville.
Kentucky will open the tournament with a doubleheader on
Friday playing the Lipscomb Bison at 11:30 a.m. ET before ending the night with
a 1:30 p.m. ET matchup with the Miami (OH) RedHawks. Saturday the team will
have another doubleheader, starting with the Eastern Illinois Panthers at 11:00
a.m. ET and the Chattanooga Mocs at 4:00 p.m. ET.
The Chattanooga Classic will wrap up for Kentucky on Sunday
with the Evansville Purple Aces at 11:00 a.m. ET.
St. Louis, Mo., native Katie Reed was named the Southeastern
Conference’s Freshman of the Week. This past weekend, the second basemen hit
.524 with 11 hits in 21 at bats, six runs scored, a team-leading six RBI and
also hit her first three career home runs. The first long ball came off her bat
against San Diego State in the top of the first inning to give Kentucky a 2-0
lead – a lead the Wildcats would not relinquish. Later in the game, she gave UK
an insurance run with a solo shot to left before belting a homer to left again
against South Dakota to close out the weekend. Her three home runs lead the
team.
Overall on the season, Reed is batting at a .500 clip, which
is second on the team behind Sylver Samuel (.536). Reed Had 17 hits, 12 runs
scored, three doubles, the aforementioned three homers, two stolen bases, and
three walks drawn on the season. Kentucky had a successful run in the Kajikawa
Classic, going 5-1 with wins over four ranked teams, followed by going 4-1 in
the Campbell/Cartier Classic in San Diego, Calif., this past weekend to round
out its western swing to start the 2016 season.
The Chattanooga Classic will be a homecoming for players
Kelsey Nunley of Soddy Daisy, Tenn. and Meagan Prince of Martin, Tenn. Prince
will play in front of a home crowd coming off of a no-hitter versus Texas Tech.
Scouting Lipscomb
The Lipscomb Bison enter the weekend after losing their
four-game winning streak to Eastern Kentucky in the final day of the Total
Control Sports Invitational last Sunday afternoon. The Bison opened the season
0-4 prior to winning four straight games.
Scouting Miami (OH)
The Miami University RedHawks enter Friday’s matchup with the
Wildcats 2-2 overall on the season. The RedHawks competed in the Panther
Invitational last weekend in Atlanta, Ga., collecting wins over Maryland and
Mercer with losses to No. 4 Alabama and Georgia State.
Scouting Eastern
Illinois
The Eastern Illinois Panthers enter the Frost Classic with a
3-7 record on the season. The Panthers were blanked by Ole Miss 8-0 in the
final game of the Troy Classic weekend after an 0-5 weekend at the Troy Classic
with losses to McNeese State and Ole Miss twice with a single loss to Troy. The
Panthers have wins over IUPUI two times and North Dakota, which happened in the
first weekend at the Iowa State Cyclone Invitational.
Scouting Chattanooga
The Chattanooga Mocs enter play with an 8-3 record on the
season. The Mocs lost two games to wrap
up the Chattanooga Spring Classic last weekend against UT Martin, Wright State
and IPFW. The Mocs had won eight straight to start the season before entering
their current three-game slide with notable wins over Dayton, Akron and
Detroit-Mercy.
Scouting Evansville
The Evansville Purple Aces enter the matchup after a second
4-1 tournament run. The purple Aces capped off the Tiger Classic with a 5-4
extra-inning game against Northern Kentucky. Evansville has gone 4-1 in both of
its two tournaments this season, the Troy Firehouse Invite and the Tennessee
State Tiger Classic.
