Stallings Has Career Round on Day Two of the Schenkel

STATESBORO, Ga. – Four Kentucky men’s golfers had under-par rounds on the second day of the Schenkel Invitational led by a career-best round from junior Stephen Stallings. Stallings became the first Wildcat since the 2013-14 season to score a round of 65. Senior David Snyder and sophomores Tyler ‘Chip’ McDaniel and Cooper Musselman were the other Wildcats with scores below par as the Wildcats sit in sixth place following day two of the three-day tournament.

“What a bounce back day for Stephen Stallings. A 65 with a 29 on the front nine just exemplifies his character and heart. As a team, we are close, real close. We are putting a ton of pressure on the course. When we eliminate the unforced errors, look out for what this team can do.”

About the lineup:

Stallings had a fantastic second round of play at the Schenkel, scoring a 7-under, 65. The Louisville, Ky., native is the first Wildcat to have a round of 65 since the 2013-14 season, where Snyder fired the same score at the 2014 SEC Championships. Stallings is the 11th Wildcat since 2005 to post a 65 or better round.

Stallings charted an eagle on the seventh hole, finishing the day with an impressive six birdies, five of which came on the opening nine. He started the closing nine with a bogie, but ended the round with a 7-under, 65. He currently sits in a tie for 20th on the individual leaderboard, jumping a tournament-best 44 spots in the second round.

Musselman continues his success at the Schenkel on day two as he currently leads the Wildcats with a 6-under, 138 overall score. During the second round he scored a 2-under, 70, charting five birdies on the day, three of which came in the opening nine holes. The Louisville, Ky., native currently sits in eighth place on the individual leaderboard with 18 holes remaining.

McDaniel’s 2-under, 70, score marks his 13th under par round of the season. The sophomore opened with a bogie, but followed up with three birdies to finish up the second round, currently sitting in a tie for 25th, individually. Snyder also contributed to the Wildcats’ success, firing an even par, 72. The senior charted four birdies, one being on the final hole, and is tied for 40th on the individual leaderboard.

Freshman Jalen Ledger posted an even score during the second round of play, finishing the day with two birdies, one being on the final hole. He is tied for 51st on the individual leaderboard.

Freshman Lukas Euler, playing as an individual, fired a 76 on Saturday and is in a tie for 77th. 

The Tournament Field:

Kentucky was one of two teams to fire rounds of 11-under par or better. Auburn, who rose to 11 places to first place carded a low-round of 19-under par on the second day of action.

Georgia State and the Tigers are tied for first with a team total of 23-under par. Wake Forest and Vanderbilt are tied for third and just one stroke off of the lead. North Carolina sits at 17-under par and just one stroke ahead of the Wildcats who are 16-under for the tournament behind a season-low round of 277. It’s the eighth best round under Craig and the best since the third round of last season’s Schenkel Invitational when the Cats carded a 278. 

The Course: 

The Forest Heights Country Club will be home to the Schenkel Invitational again this year. Forest Heights has been the host of the tournament since it’s start in 1971. Kentucky returns to the tournament for the tenth consecutive season, having competed 15 times in tournament history.

Players will tee off with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. ET on Sunday for the final 18 holes. Teams will be paired based on the results from the first two rounds and conclude at the end of the day on Sunday. Fans can follow along with the action on golfstat.com
