Every Tuesday, UK Athletics recognizes outstanding performances for our student-athletes. These are the honorees for the week ending Sunday, Feb. 3:
Men’s basketball: Nerlens Noel
Freshman Nerlens Noel had another incredible week for UK. It began with a 12-block performance in an upset of No. 16 Ole Miss. The 12 rejections set a new single-game record for Kentucky and ranks as the third-most ever for an SEC player. His 97 blocks on the season rank him fourth on the SEC single-season freshman record lists and he ranks second in UK allure only behind Anthony Davis. Through 21 games Noel has 97 blocks, Davis had 98. He followed that defensive-gem with a breakout offensive outing in an overtime victory at Texas A&M. He logged a career-high 19 points and earned his third double-double of the season with 14 rebounds. The 14 rebounds ranks as the second most in a single game in his career, and the most against an SEC foe. His .700 field goal clip also ranked as the best on the team.
Men’s basketball: Kyle Wiltjer
Sophomore Kyle Wiltjer led Kentucky to an upset victory at No. 16 Ole Miss by scoring a career-high 26 points including knocking down five 3-pointers. The win marked the first upset of a top-25 ranked opponent this season for UK. Wiltjer also added seven rebounds, the most in league play this season for the second-year player. His three steals marked a career-high and he also added a trio of assists. Wiltjer then helped pace UK to an overtime win at Texas A&M to complete the 2-0 week. Wiltjer scored 10 points including a season-high five free throws made including a pair in overtime. He nailed a 3-pointer and has made at least one in five of his last six games. His three blocks led the team and resulted in a career-high.
