Kentucky Baseball Rolls Past Miami (Ohio), 11-1

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Evan White tied a career high with four hits, including a solo home run, as the Kentucky baseball team rolled past Miami (Ohio) 11-1 in a rain-shortened, eight-inning game on Wednesday night at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
Sophomore pitcher Zach Logue (2-1) pitched five innings, giving up one earned run, four hits and one walk to earn the victory. Logue struck out seven Miami hitters to tie his career high in that category.
Kentucky scored first when sophomore shortstop Riley Mahan doubled home JaVon Shelby in the bottom of the second inning to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Mahan advanced to third on a groundout by Tristan Pompey and scored on a single by sophomore catcher Troy Squires to make it 2-0 Cats.
The Wildcats were able to take advantage of Miami starter Bailey Martin’s inability to find the strike zone later in the second inning. Martin walked Kentucky designated hitter Gunnar McNeill to load the bases, then walked Zach Reks to score Squires and give the Cats a 3-0 lead.
Kentucky struck again in the bottom of the third inning, and Mahan was in the middle of the action one more time. With one out, Mahan doubled for the second time in as many innings. And when Squires reached on a throwing error by Miami shortstop Chad Sedio, Mahan came around to score and give Kentucky a 4-0 advantage.
Still in the third inning, Kentucky first baseman Evan White collected his third hit in the game with an infield single. Storm Wilson followed with a double to right, scoring White and Squires to make it 6-0 Kentucky.
Kentucky added a pair of runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by an RBI double by Shelby. White hit his solo homer in the fifth inning to make it 9-0 Cats.
In the sixth inning, Kentucky added two runs to close out the scoring before a line of thunderstorms forced the cancellation of the remainder of the game early in the eighth inning.
The Wildcats travel to Auburn this weekend for a three-game SEC series against the Tigers. The first game of the series is on Friday at 7 p.m. The series resumes with another 7 p.m. start on Saturday, followed by a 2 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
