Demarco Robinson is coming off his best game in a Kentucky uniform at a time when not many Wildcats can say the same.Now the Wildcats are looking at Robinson for leadership as they embark on the challenge of improving heading into Saturday’s home opener against Miami (Ohio).Robinson caught five balls for 69 yards with a long of 34 coming on his TD reception. He also picked up 54 yards on two punt returns, with a long of 33, which came in the fourth quarter.Coming off his strong performance, and given his relative seniority among a young and inexperienced group of wide outs unit that has a lot to prove following its season-opening performance, Robinson is eager to impart a good example.A major part of that leadership role may be providing a spark for an offense that seemed to lack some energy in week one. His play in the return game may serve as such a catalyst.Robinson is feeling more comfortable as a returner this season, adding a new wrinkle to a UK return game which has not been particularly productive in recent seasons. After a week of games, Robinson owns a Southeastern Conference-leading 27.0-yard punt return average, which also ranks No.2 in the nation. A key to the newfound success may be the freedom as a returner, which safeties coach and special teams coordinator Bradley Dale Peveto has given Robinson.”He just tells me to be a player,” Robinson said of his return game instructions from Peveto. “He just tells me what direction to go in and I try to do it. After all that it’s just being a football player.”On punt and kick returns you can change the game around quickly. A big return gets our whole offense and the sideline excited.”Despite the fact that his strong performance came in a losing effort, Robinson also displayed the makings of game-changing ability in the receiving game on his 34-yard touchdown catch from Maxwell Smith late in the fourth.He got free down the left sideline and displayed excellent coordination, tiptoeing in bounds as he made the catch. At first the play was ruled incomplete, but it was overturned and ruled a touchdown upon video review. “I didn’t think my feet were in bounds at first, but after I saw the replay (on the massive LP Field end zone video boards) I was pretty sure it was a catch.”The Wildcats will look for more big plays like Robinson’s fourth quarter touchdown reception from him and his teammates going forward in 2013.Robinson is taking it upon himself to help inspire his teammates to follow his lead.He’s already displayed those leadership attributes in his interactions with the young and talented Ryan Timmons, who moved up to the No. 1 spot at the inside wide receiver spot this week after lining up all over the field vs. WKU.Timmons showed promise with a 33-yard run late in the game, but he fumbled at the end of that big play.
