The University of Kentucky football team held its secondscrimmage of spring practice for two and one-half hoursSaturday at Commonwealth Stadium.
Although the defense was declared the winner of thescrimmage, based on a system that awards points for defensivestops, turnovers created, etc., the Wildcats continued topile up big offensive numbers for passing yardage. ThreeWildcat quarterbacks combined to complete 81 of 113 passes(71.7 percent) for 806 yards and six touchdowns. The Wildcatoffense scored eight touchdowns in 26 possessions.
Sophomore quarterback Tim Couch completed 40 of 59passes for 355 yards and no touchdowns. Redshirt freshmanquarterback Ryan Keller hit 35 of 46 passes for 388 yards andfive touchdowns. Redshirt freshman Brian Siddens hit 6 of 8for 63 yards and one score.
Seventeen different receivers caught passes. Sophomorewide receiver Chad Spencer led the way with 11 catches for154 yards and three touchdowns. Other top pass catchersincluded senior halfback Norman Mason (13 for 121, 1 TD),junior wide receiver Kevin Coleman (9-76), junior halfbackCraig Yeast (7-54), and sophomore wide receiver QuentinMcCord (6-44). Additional touchdown passes were caught bysenior tight end Darrin Clark and redshirt freshman widereceiver Matt Powell.
Redshirt freshman fullback Wendell Childs paced therunning attack with 16 rushes for 51 yards and twotouchdowns. Additional ballcarriers included sophomorefullback A. J. Simon (5 for 30 yards), sophomore halfbackCarl Grinter (6-22), and sophomore halfback Anthony White (7-17).
The defense was led by senior strong safety TremayneMartin, who had two interceptions to go along with the twointerceptions he had in last Saturday’s scrimmage. Seniorcornerback Littleton Ward and junior linebacker Shawn Smithalso had interceptions today. Junior defensive end RobertJones had three sacks and a pass breakup. The Wildcatdefense recovered two fumbles.
Junior punter Jimmy Carter led the kicking game,averaging 40.5 yards on four punts.
The Wildcats return to practice on Monday, Wednesday,and Friday before having their third scrimmage on Saturday,April 19. The Blue-White Spring Game is slated for Saturday,April 26, at 7 p.m. at Commonwealth Stadium.
