LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 15, 1997) — The University of Kentucky women’s basketball teamforced 50 turnovers in a 100-57 exhibition victory over the HungarianKosasrlabda Sports Club at Memorial Coliseum Saturday.
Five Wildcats scored in double figures, led by freshman Laura Meadows’ 19points. Judit Madaras led Kosasrlabda with 17 points as one of only twoHungarian players to break double digits. “I am pleased that our freshmenand newcomers had the opportunity to play and see what we want to do inrunning our up-tempo style,” Coach Bernadette Mattox said. “I was hopingthat it we would get up by a bunch so they could play those minutes to getthat experience.” All eleven Wildcats scored in the game, while nine played15 minutes or more. Meadows, the 1997 West Virginia Miss Basketball,had an impressive all-around game, also recording six steals, three reboundsand three assists. Jaye Barnes led the UK effort on the boards by collectingeight rebounds to go along with 11 points. Patrice Boyd (13 points), NatalieMartinez (11 points) and Tiffany Wait (10 points) rounded out thedouble-figure scorers for Kentucky.
“This was a good way to start the season,” Meadows said. “We came outand got 100 points and played hard. We all are just excited about thisperformance.”
The game was in doubt for approximately six minutes, before the Wildcatswent on a 15-2 run to lead 24-11. Meadows scored seven points over therun, including a three and a layup to put UK up by 13. Kentucky led 42-30at half while the final 43-point margin was the largest of the game. TheWildcats will open regular season action on Tuesday, Nov. 18 when theytravel to Bloomington, Ind., to face the Indiana Hoosiers at 7:30 p.m.
