LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 23rd-ranked University of Kentucky women’s tennis teamupset No. 14 Arkansas, 6-3, at home on Friday.
The Wildcats (8-2, 3-2 Southeastern Conference) won three singles matchesin straight sets. UK’s Massoumeh Emami defeated 24th-ranked Chin Bee Khoo,6-1, 6-3, at No. 1 singles, while Christy Sigurski picked up a win at No. 3singles, 6-1, 6-3, over UA’s Andrea Ho. No. 4 singles player Kelly Brownwon 6-0, 6-3, over 46th-ranked Tara Reid of Arkansas. Wildcat Brooke Skeencame back against UA’s Andriana Garcia to pick up a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory.
The UK freshman duo of Shannon Stafford and Carolina Mayorga defeated theArkansas team of Ostling and Adriana Garcia, 8-4, to clinch the win, andUK’s top tandem of Brown and Emami picked up a 9-7 doubles victory overUA’s Khoo and Maria Pavlidou.
“This is the biggest win that our seniors have had in the last threeyears,” Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “Having that senior leadership is veryimportant, and for the younger players to contribute to this win and sharein this experience will help us in the future.”
With the loss, Arkansas falls to 5-4 overall, 1-2 in the SEC
Kentucky next sees action when it travels to Columbus, Ohio, to face OhioState on March 13.
