LEXINGTON, Kty. – Fighting wind and cool temperatures, the University of Kentucky men’s tennis team (16-7, 4-6) moved indoors to stomp the South Carolina Gamecocks (16-6, 4-6), 5-2, at the Hilary J. Boone Indoor Tennis Center Friday. UK’s Edo Bawono and Dan Spaner were the first to finish business by defeated USC’s Miller Brice and Tomasz Wawrzyniak, 8-2, at number three. However, their victory turned sour when the Gamecocks took the doubles point at number one and number two.
The Wildcats delivered at one, two punch and took control of the match in singles action as UK’s Cedric Kauffmann, ranked sixth in the nation, defeated USC’s Vladimir Pavicevic, 25th-ranked, 6-4, 7-5. At number two, Fluitt def. No. 30 Jerome Jourdon. This is the second meeting of the season for Fluitt and Jourdon, the first being last September when Jourdon defeated Fluitt 6-1, 6-1 at the Clay Courts in Baltimore, Md. Other victories for the Wildcats were at number five by UK’s newcomer Edo Bawono and at number six by junior Patrik Johansson.
The other point for USC was at number three when the 29th-ranked Guillaume Legat defeated UK’s Dan Spaner 6-4, 6-1.
The Wildcats came back after a 5-1 loss to Tennessee at home last Wednesday. UK will take on LSU, the second-ranked team in the nation, in its final home match of the regular season on Sunday at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center at 1 p.m. Seniors Marcus Fluitt, Cedric Kauffmann, Mike Meier and Dan Spaner will be recognized prior to the match.
The women’s tennis team has its final home match of the season on Sunday versus South Carolina at 11 a.m.
