FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Robert Newton was three-for-four with a home run and adouble, but Arkansas’ pitching was too strong for Kentucky as the Wildcats(12-18, 4-9) lost to the Razorbacks (24-12, 10-3), 15-2 in the opening gameof a three-game series.
Arkansas took the lead in the bottom of the first inning and never lookedback, scoring six runs before UK scored in the third. Beau Moore walked tolead off the inning and stole second, his team-leading 16th stolen base ofthe season. An Andy Green ground out advance Moore to third and AaronMcGlone singled home Kentucky’s first run to make the score 6-1.
The Wildcats were held at one run until the eighth inning when RobertNewton belted his third home run of the season over the left field wall.Kentucky gave up one run in the seventh and two in the eighth before losingthe game, 15-2.
Arkansas pitcher David Walling threw eight solid innings, striking out 12Wildcats with only one run. Kentucky’s Newton extended his hitting streakto seven games with a single in his first at-bat of the game.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday, April 10, at 2 p.m. CT, facingArkansas in the second game of the series. Junior Ben Shaffar will take themound for Kentucky and will look to improve his team-leading 66 strikeoutsin 51.2 innings pitched.
