CHARLESTON, S.C. – Junior pitcher Brandon Webb carried a no-hitter into thefifth inning and had eight strikeouts on the day as Kentucky (0-5) fell toOld Dominion (2-0), 6-3, on Saturday, February 20.
Kentucky scored first in the game. An error by ODU second baseman TonyGsell allowed senior Nate Linder to reach base. Austin Madison’s RBI singlein the bottom of the second inning scored Linder to give UK the early lead,1-0.
Old Dominion answered in the top of the third. Third baseman Jeff Eurereached base on a Linder error. Eure advanced on a Travis Silver sacrificebunt and scored on Shawn Pearson’s ground out.The game remained tied at 1-1 until the top of the sixth inning when TimHummel tripled. Hummel later scored on a Tony Gsell single, giving OldDominion the lead, 2-1.
Kentucky responded in the bottom of the inning when junior Breck Priceconnected for his first home run of the season to tie the game at two apiece.Freshman pitcher Clint Kelley relieved Brandon Webb in the eighth inning.Joseph Troilo led off the inning with a single. Tim Hummel added anothersingle to put runners on first and second with nobody out. An RBI single byGsell and a three-run home run by Jason Greiner gave the Monarchs a 6-2lead. Josh Paxton came in in relief and got out of the inning.UK rallied in the bottom of the ninth. Junior Jason Wolfe hit his firsthome run of the year and Freshman Taylor McInnis picked up his firstcollegiate hit, but UK could not catch Old Dominion and lost the game, 6-3. The Wildcats will face the Richmond Spiders in game three of theFranklin-Life Shootout on Sunday, Feb. 21, at 10 a.m.
