The 1999 Fifth Third Bank Tennis Championships have been set for August2-8 at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center on the University of Kentucky campus.

The tournament is the only professional tennis event in the state andregularly attracts the world’s best up-and-coming talent. Paul Goldstein,the 1998 Fifth Third champion, has jumped in the world rankings afterupsetting the No. 16 seed at the 1999 Wimbledon Championships.

Early commitments to this year’s Fifth Third Championships includeAmerican David Wheaton. Wheaton was a semifinalist at Wimbledon in 1991,where he upset current world No. 1 and Grand Slam champion Andre Agassi.Wheaton has been ranked as high as No. 12 in the world and will look toregain his top-20 form here in Lexington when he competes in the FifthThird qualification rounds.
