LEXINGTON, Ky. – In the marque match-up of Saturday evening at the Charles Fluitt Collegiate Classic, UK senior Johan “Boom-Boom” Hesoun used his vicious serve to beat Jeremy Bayon, ranked 65th nationally, in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6(5). In a grueling match that lasted nearly three hours, Hesoun stayed on the offensive for pretty much the whole match as his overpowering forehand shots had the Mississippi State player scrambling all over the court. Hesoun is now one of only nine players who remain undefeated after two days of action at the tournament.
“This was a great way for (Johan) Hesoun to start out the fall season,” said UK coach Dennis Emery. “It was a great win and it shows that he should be considered a top player in this conference.”
Also winning in straight sets for the Cats was Gustav Pousette who knocked off Mathieu Soto and Edo Bawano who beat Charles Sevigny. Pousette and Hesoun were double winners on the night as the tandem ousted David Ruiz and Rene Combette, 8-4, in doubles action.
In earlier action, UK?s Carlos Drada, No. 27 in the nation, fell 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-1, in a tough three set loss to the nation?s eighth ranked player, Peter Handoyo of Tennessee. Drada beat Handoyo earlier this season. Against Tennessee, Bawano beat Mark Fitzpatrick while Johan Grunditz ousted Matt Turner. Both victories came in straight sets.
