Women’s soccer collects 14th-straight win in the first day of the SEC/Big Ten Challenge.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 29, 1999) — The 14th-ranked Universityof Kentucky women’s soccer team exacted revengeagainst Minnesota and handed the Golden Gophersa 2-0 loss on the first day of the SEC/Big TenChallenge Friday evening at the UK SoccerComplex.

UK, which fell to Minnesota 6-0 in the first roundof the NCAA Tournament last season, jumped onthe Gophers in the first half and never let up as theCats claimed their school record 14th straightvictory.

Forward Keri Boyce put UK (15-2-1) on theboard at the 30:58 mark of the first half when shenetted a four-yard shot directly in front of the goal.Boyce’s shot hit the left post and bounced in. It wasthe freshman’s 11th goal of the season and DeannaStayton was credited with an assist on the play.

Ten minutes later, sophomore forward Annie Gagefaked out UM goalkeeper Dana Larson and put theball into an empty net, giving the Cats a 2-0 leadand the victory. Senior Allison Peppers assisted onGage’s 14th goal of the season.

“It was a hard fought match out there,” UK coachWarren Lipka said. “We put away our chanceswhen we had them and we’re happy to come awaywith the win. We are looking forward to playing atough Michigan squad on Sunday which will be aspecial day for our seniors.”

The Cats outshot UM (11-6-0), 21-15 while the Gophers out cornered UKsix to two.

UK sophomore keeper Beth Wells recorded nine saves in posting her sixthshutout of the season.

UK returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 31, when the Cats play host to the19th-ranked Michigan Wolverines at 3 p.m. Sunday is Senior Day for UKas Hope Deutschle, Brooke Hergesell, Allison Peppers, and Deanna Staytonwill be honored before the game. Alabama will take on Minnesota in the firstgame of the day, Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

In the first match of the SEC/Big Ten Challenge on Friday, Michigan(13-4-1) defeated Alabama 2-1. The Wolverines outshot the Crimson Tide(6-13-0) 35-4 but were only able to net two goals.
