Samuel Named to Academic All-District Team: Kentucky kickerMarc Samuel has been elected to the GTE Academic All-District IV team asselected by the College Sports Information Directors of America(CoSIDA).

Although he is only a sophomore in football eligibility, Samuelalready has earned his bachelor’s degree. He joined the football teamin the spring of 1997, took extra class loads and summer schoolsessions, and completed a double major in finance and management in Aug.1999. He graduated with a 3.88 grade point average. This semester, heis doing an internship in legal research.

On the field, Samuel is the leading scorer for the Wildcats with74 points. He has made 14 of 17 field goals and 32 of 34 extra points.He made three field goals at Indiana and South Carolina, including acareer long kick of 44 yards against the Hoosiers. He ranks third inthe SEC and 19th nationally in field goals per game and is second in theSEC in scoring by kickers. He is one of 20 semifinalists for the LouGroza Award, which is given to the nation’s best kicker.

CoSIDA District IV is comprised of universities in the states ofMichigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. By being elected tothe All-District IV team, Samuel advances to the national ballot for GTEAcademic All-America. That team will be announced in December.

UK running back A. J. Simon, who has a 3.22 GPA in the major ofart studio, also earned a nomination for the team but was not elected.To earn a nomination for the Academic All-America team, a player must bea sophomore or higher in academic and athletic eligiblity, be a starteror important reserve, and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20or higher.

White To Play in All-Star Gridiron Classic: UK running backAnthony White has accepted an invitation to play in the second annualAll-Star Gridiron Classic, which will be played in Orlando, Fla., onJan. 29, 2000. The game is organized by the Citrus Bowl and featuresTeam USA vs. Team Florida. White will play for Team USA.

White leads the Kentucky rushing attack with 512 yards and fivetouchdowns during the 1999 season. He has caught 49 passes for 399yards and one TD. White is one of four players in NCAA history who havesurpassed 1,400 rushing yards and 1,400 receiving yards in a career.

White is the second Wildcat to play in the All-Star GridironClassic. Offensive tackle Kris Comstock played in the inaugural eventin Jan. 1999.

It’s a Sellout: The Kentucky student body acquired the fullallotment of student tickets for the Tennessee game, thereby completinga sellout. This is the third sellout of the season, joining theLouisville and Florida games. Twelve of the 18 home games under CoachHal Mumme have been sold out. UK is setting school records forattendance in the first year of expanded Commonwealth Stadium. UK hasaveraged 67,103 in the first five games of the season.
