Men down South Carolina while the women defeat Arkansas and Gamecocks.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (Jan. 15, 2000 ) — The UK men’s swimmingand diving team defeated South Carolina 137-103Saturday afternoon at the Carolina Natatorium,while the UK women’s squad defeated USC andArkansas, 124-102.
Junior David Tweedie captured the 500-yardfreestyle (4:34.07) and 1,000 freestyle (9:26.93),while freshman diver Clayton Moss won the3-meter event and placed second on the 1-meter.
Shaun Zitani added a first-place finish in the 50freestyle (20.75) and anchored UK’s winning 200freestyle relay with Tweedie, Aaron Workman, andMacon White (1:23.60).
On the women’s side, junior standout MelissaOlson won the 200 individual medley (2:04.01) and200 butterfly (2:03.46). The Charleston, W. Va.,native, added a second place finish in the 200breaststroke (2:20.29).
Senior All-American Annabel Kosten won the 100freestyle (50.69) for the Cats and swam on bothfirst-place relays — the 400 medley relay (3:52.69)and the 200 freestyle relay (1:36.15).
“The main thing we wanted to do was swim fast because we’re going intothe conference meet next month, and I think we did that,” UK coach GaryConelly said. “The fact that on the men’s side they only had 12 swimmersand we had 13 made it fun being a close meet with rivalries in each event.Melissa Olson was awesome and did a real nice job in her events today.”
The win improved the women’s record to 5-0, while the men’s squadpushed its record to 2-3 overall. UK returns to the water at 1 p.m. onSaturday, Jan. 22, when the Cats play host to LSU at the Lancaster AquaticCenter.
