The University of Kentucky rifle team fell to Xavier on Saturday, Jan. 22 in a dual match held in Lexington, Ky., by a final score of 6149-6050.
The Cats were led by freshman Crystal Hamilton who posted an 1145 in smallbore, placing third, and tied for first place with a 391 in air rifle. Senior Matt Newburn made a strong return to competition following a semester off with an 1144 in smallbore.
Xavier’s Shari Jedinak won the match with a combined score of 1554, including an 1165 in smallbore.
“We didn’t notch a win today, but we are starting to come together in a way that should really benefit us in the next two or three weeks,” Coach Harry Mullins said. “I feel the team did a great job of staying focused and working on every shot. Now we just need to keep from making small mistakes.”
The Cats are back in action on Jan. 29 when they compete in the annual Withrow Invitational in Murray, Ky.
