LOUISVILLE, Kty. – Three Kentucky men’s tennis players won their singles matches, but it wasn’t enough as No. 8 UCLA defeated the Wildcats, 5-3. The Cats are now 3-3 in dual match play heading in to the USTA/ITA National Collegiate Men’s Indoor Championships, which begin in Louisville on Thursday.
In singles action, Gustav Pousette defeated Lassi Ketola at the No. 4 position in two sets, 6-3, 6-2. At the No. 5 position, Edo Bawono took three sets to beat Efran Djahangiri, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8. In the No. 6 position, freshman Jorge Mario Escallo defeated Chris Sands, 7-6, 7-6, in his third dual match of the season. Carlos Drada, No. 11 in the nation, lost to Jong-Min Lee of UCLA, 6-3, 6-2. Johan Hesoun and Johan Grunditz also lost their singles matches.
Using the new ITA scoring format, the Bruins won two points rather than the usual one point for sweeping the doubles action. This change, which is being implemented at this weekend’s USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, was used at this match to prepare for the tournament.
At the National Indoors starting on Thursday, The Cats will be playing
No. 3 Duke in first-round action at 4:30 p.m. at the Louisville Tennis Club.
