Men’s track and field finishes ninth while the women place 12th.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Feb. 27, 2000) — Senior Matt Kavanagh gave the University of Kentuckyanother top-four finish, taking third place in the 35-pound weight throwSunday on the final day of the SEC Indoor Championships. His toss of62-02.50 contributed 6.0 points to UK’s team effort.
Freshman Chad Johnson also earned a top-four finish crossing the line inthe 800-meter run in 1:50.74. Johnson’s time established a new seasonal andpersonal best, surpassing his previous top time by more than one second andgave the Wildcats 5.0 points to add to the team total. Kavanagh and Johnsongave UK its third and fourth top-four finish to go along with junior ChrisDaniel’s second in the pole vault and freshman Janet Crawford’s fourth inthe high jump, both earned on Saturday.
In the men’s one-mile run, freshman Hunter Thomas garnered seventh placein his first SEC Championship meet with a time of 4:09.90. In thepreliminaries on Saturday, Thomas qualified for the finals with a time of4:09.77, setting a new seasonal and personal best by shaving off nearlyfour seconds. Also setting a seasonal best in the prelims was junior JudeHammond. His time of 21.38 was .36 seconds faster than his previous toptime and qualified him for Sunday’s finals where he finished seventh.
Also providing points for the team scores with their top-eight finisheswere junior Andrew Vander Wagen in the high jump, Falana Greenwell in thetriple jump, and the men’s distance medley relay team of Thomas, Johnson,and freshmen Verbon Graves and Hunter Spencer.
The final team standings saw Kentucky’s men pick up 24.50 points and ninthplace, while the women earned 7.50 points and 12th place. Arkansas was theoverwhelming winner. The Razorback men and women staked their claim as theconference’s best with large margins of victory. The UA men earned 140points, 44 points ahead of second-place Florida. The Arkansas women claimed168 points, a whopping 83.5 points over runner-up LSU.
Kavanagh, Vander Wagen and junior Shevan Threats have alreadyprovisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 10-11 inFayetteville, Ark. The Cats still have one last chance, however, to earnqualifying marks and times for the NCAA meet when they attend last-chancemeets on March 3-4.
