LEXINGTON, Kty. – Brooke Skeen, a junior on the UK women’s tennis team, was namedSoutheastern Conference player of the week today by the SEC office.
Skeen has started the spring season with a 6-1 record with wins over threeranked opponents, including a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over the 11th-rankedplayer in the nation, Florida’s Baili Camino. Skeen’s only loss came at thehands of the 14th-ranked Ivona Mihailova of Ole Miss. Skeen is also onehalf of the country’s 36th-ranked doubles team. Skeen, along with freshmanLeigh Bradwell, have posted a 4-3 record this spring.
“Brooke has come so far and has really stepped it up for us with some bigwins. She is playing some of the best tennis in the country,” Coach MarkGuilbeau said. “When an individual receives an award like this it is reallya credit to the whole team. The work ethic of this team is terrific andthey really challenge each other in practice to get better.”
The North Carolina native is the Wildcats’ lone upperclassman surrounded bythree sophomores and four freshmen and has emerged as the team leader.
Skeen played the No. 6 singles spot for UK in 1999 and has improved greatlyin 2000, taking over the No. 2 singles spot for the Cats.
Skeen and the tennis Cats will be back in action on Friday, March 3, whenthey travel to West Lafayette, Ind. to take on the Boilermakers of Purdue.
