LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 2) – The 21st-ranked Kentucky Wildcats baseball team will be seeking its 11th straight win to start the 2000 season when the Dayton Flyers come to town for the first of a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 3. The game is the season-opener for Cliff Hagan Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
The Cats (10-0) have already set a school record for most wins to start a season and are now in search of the overall school record for most consecutive wins 13 by the 1992 ballclub. They could equal that mark with a sweep of Dayton this weekend.
Sparking the Wildcats’ incredible run to start this season has been senior second baseman Andy Green (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Christian). Batting first or second in all 10 of his starts, Green leads the team with 14 runs scored, eight stolen bases, four doubles and is tied with fellow senior Aaron McGlone (South Shore, Ky./Greenup County) with a team-high .511 on-base percentage. His .405 average is third on the club. Green has the distinction of appearing in every UK game during his career and will tie the school record for consecutive games played at 180 with an appearance in Friday’s contest.
Slated to start Friday’s game for the Cats is junior Brandon Webb (Ashland, Ky/Paul G. Blazer). Webb (3-0) has led the resurgence of the UK pitching staff this season, as his 26 strikeouts (8.67 p/g) in 19-1/3 innings pitched leads the club. His 1.86 ERA through three starts is second among UK starters next to freshman Scott Wade’s 1.66 mark. Wade (Kingsport, Tenn./Sullivan South), also 3-0, is Saturday’s scheduled starter, and is coming off his first collegiate complete game last Saturday against Eastern Illinois, a 5-2 victory. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. First pitch on Sunday is also scheduled for 2:05 with UK’s starter for the game yet to be determined.
