LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky track and field squad journeysto Auburn University for a Southeastern Conference Quad Meet Saturday,April 1, 2000.
The Cats will be led by senior Matt Kavanagh. Kavanagh, a 2000 NCAA IndoorAll-American, hopes to improve on his NCAA outdoor provisional qualifyinghammer throw earned at the Hurricane Invitational two weeks ago at theUniversity of Miami. His throw of 207-10.00 was the second longest in UKhistory.
For the women, junior Falana Greenwell will attempt to better her NCAAoutdoor provisional qualifying triple jump of 42-00.75. Junior RebeccaWedel enters this second meet of the outdoor season having set the UKrecord in the hammer at Miami. She finished the indoor season at the SECChampionships by setting the school record in the 20-pound weight throw.Head Coach Don Weber said the strong competition this early in the outdoorseason will help down the road.
“Although it’s an early season meet,” Weber said, “competing with three ofthe best track and field programs in the nation will require us to be inchampionship form to be competitive. We’re a young team, so I’m anxious tosee how we’ll respond. I hope we’ll be better late in the season as aresult of competing against the best from the beginning.”
Teams from Auburn, Tennessee and Florida will provide UK top competition.On the men’s side, all three schools boast top-12 teams according toTrackwire Online with Auburn and Florida at No. 6 and 7 and Tennessee atNo. 12. Auburn boasts the No. 8 women’s team in the nation while Floridafields the No. 12 squad.
The action begins in Auburn, Ala., with the field events at 11:30 a.m.,with the running events will commencing at 2 p.m.
