LEXINGTON, Kty. – The defense led the way early and the offense came on strong atthe end as the Kentucky football team worked through a three-hour,15-minute scrimmage Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Stadium.

The scrimmage was UK’s second of the spring football season andthe players persevered through challenging conditions with coldtemperatures, strong winds, and frequent rain and sleet showers.

The defense looked good early on, allowing only three touchdownsand one field goal in the first 25 offensive possessions. The Wildcatdefenders also created seven turnovers, including five interceptions andtwo fumble recoveries. The interceptions were made by cornerbackDerrick Tatum, linebacker Jamal White, free safety Quentus Cumby, andstrong safeties Patrick Wiggins and Nigel Smith. Cumby had a secondinterception nullified because of a penalty.

The offensive pass blocking was improved over last week’sscrimmage, although the defense did manage five quarterback sacks.Defensive end Matt Layow led the way with three sacks and ends ChrisDemaree and Matt Schneider added one each.

The offense began to heat up later in the scrimmage, gettingeight touchdowns and a field goal on the last 13 possessions. Alltotaled, the offense scored 11 touchdowns and two field goals in 38possessions.

Quarterback Dusty Bonner tallied most of the offensiveproduction, leading 10 touchdown drives and a field goal in 18possessions. Bonner completed 44 of 64 passes for 561 yards, fourtouchdowns, and two interceptions. Bonner also ran six times for 68yards and three touchdowns.

Jared Lorenzen, who is competing with Bonner for the startingquarterback job, completed 17 of 43 passes for 168 yards, no touchdowns,and one interception. He added 44 rushing yards on four attempts.Lorenzen guided the offense to one touchdown and a field goal in 13possessions.

Third-team quarterback Mark Perry completed 12 of 26 passes for126 yards. He was intercepted twice.

Wide receiver Quentin McCord was the receiving yardage leaderwith three catches for 118 yards, including TD bombs of 60 and 58 yards.Tight end Derek Smith also surpassed the century mark with 10 catchesfor 109 yards.

Other receiving leaders included fullback Artose Pinner (4 for90 yards), halfback Kendrick Shanklin (8-45), tight end Bobby Blizzard(5-51, 1 TD), fullback Martez Johnson (6-61), wide receiver Derek Abney(3-71, 1 TD), tight end Chase Harp (5-64), tight end Mike Beirne (7-46),and wide receiver Neal Brown (6-69).

In addition to the improved pass blocking, the offensive linealso appeared to make progress in the running game. Fullback ArtosePinner rushed 17 times for 166 yards and one touchdown. Fullback MartezJohnson rushed 13 times for 73 yards and one TD. Halfback KendrickShanklin had two scoring runs. Quarterbacks Bonner and Lorenzencombined for rush for 112 yards, not counting sack losses.

In the kicking game, Seth Hanson made his only official fieldgoal attempt, a 39-yard kick. However, Hanson also made a 33-yarderthat was taken off the board because of a roughing-the-kicker penalty.He made all six extra point kicks. Also staying busy as a punter,Hanson averaged 35.7 yards on nine punts.

Kicker Brandon Sanders also looked good, making a 21-yard fieldgoal and all three extra point tries. Glenn Pakulak also saw puntingaction and averaged 25.5 yards on two punts.

Saturday’s scrimmage marked the halfway point of springpractice. The Wildcats return to the practice field Monday at 2 p.m.There will be another scrimmage on April 15 and the Blue/White Gameconcludes spring practice on April 22.
