Wildcats pick up 2-1 opening win but fall 3-1 in second game of doubleheader.
OXFORD, Miss. (April 14, 2000) — The University of Kentucky softballteam split a doubleheader with the Ole Miss RebelsFriday evening at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. UKscored a 2-1 victory over the Rebels in the opener, theCats’ first win over the Rebels in school history. UMcaptured the second game, 3-1.
UK (26-20, 8-6 Southeastern Conference) jumped onthe Rebels in the top of the first when freshman NikkiJones scored on a throwing error by UM pitcher HollyBurris. Jones advanced to third on a bunt by UKcatcher Lyndsey Angus, however Burris overthrew firstbase, allowing Jones to score.
The Cats added another run in the sixth on LeslieKwiatkowski’s RBI-single to center field, scoring BethFogle from third to give UK a 2-0 lead.
UM’s Heather Swinney hit a solo shot over the rightfield fence, her fifth round-tripper of the season, in thebottom of the sixth off UK starter Keary Camunas forthe game’s final margin of 2-1.
Camunas improved to 15-10 on the season, settingthe UK school mark for wins in a single season. The Lake Forest, Calif., nativestruck out five batters, while UM hurler Holly Burris struck out six batters,dropping her record to 10-12.
In the second game, Lindsay Price’s RBI-single scored Mandy Shklar fromsecond, giving the Rebels a 1-0 lead.
UK tied the game in the third inning on Beth Fogle’s run-scoring single to leftfield. With the bases loaded and one out, Leslie Kwiatkowski struck out andTiffany Kruse flied out to second base as the Rebels escaped the jam.
In the bottom of the third, UM (18-33, 5-13 SEC) pushed two runners across totake a 3-1 victory as the Rebels held UK scoreless through final four innings.
UM pitcher Jennifer Hughes, who struck out a career-high 10 batters, improvedto 4-5 on the season, while UK’s Morgan Marr fell to 5-5.
UK returns to action on Saturday, April 14 when the Cats travel to Starkville,Miss., to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The doubleheader will begin at1:30 p.m. (EST).
