Wildcats look to snap losing streak.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 12, 2000) — The University of Kentuckywomen’s basketball team will play host to SouthCarolina on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. in MemorialColiseum. Sunday’s game is Take A Kid To TheGame Day. Admission if free for children ages 18and under with a paying adult.
The Wildcats (11-10, 3-6 SoutheasternConference) look to snap a five-game losing streakafter falling to Arkansas last Sunday, 83-70. TheCats won both meetings with South Carolina lastseason, winning 78-76 in Columbia, S.C., and93-65 in Lexington. UK leads the overall series15-7 and is 8-2 against the Lady Gamecocks inMemorial Coliseum. The Cats have not lost to USCat home since 1996.
“We’ve made some adjustments in practice thisweek to help us match up with South Carolina’ssize,” UK Coach Bernadette Mattox said. “Theyare a young basketball team and a very goodbasketball team. They are quick and they have a good inside game. It will bea battle.”
South Carolina, who lost its leading scorer Shaun Gortman (14.8 points pergame) last week to a season-ending knee injury, enters Sunday’s game,12-11 overall and 2-8 in the SEC. The Lady Gamecocks wenthead-to-head with No. 2 Georgia on Thursday, falling 84-61 in Athens.USC, down by only nine at the half, charted four players in double figuresincluding a game-high 17 points from Jocelyn Penn, off the bench. Penn isUSC’s second leading scorer behind Gortman, averaging 12.1 points and6.2 rebounds per game.
In addition to free admission, all kids can take place in interactive activitieson the upper concourse in Memorial Coliseum starting at 1 p.m. Various UKathletes will be available to sign autographs and kids of all ages can havetheir picture made with Scratch, the official mascot of UK women’sbasketball. The first 1,000 fans will receive free Kentucky Wildcat keychains. Admission is $5 for adults.
