Men’s soccer finishes 1999 campaign at 13-7-1.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Nov. 21, 1999) — The University ofKentucky men’s soccer team dropped aheartbreaking 1-0 double-overtime decision tosecond-ranked Indiana on Sunday in the openinground of the NCAA Tournament.

After over 100 minutes of scoreless soccer,Indiana’s All-American forward Aleksey Korolpushed a slow-rolling two-yard shot over the UKgoal line to give the defending champions the win inthe 113th minute.

“I’m so proud of the effort our players gave today,”UK Coach Ian Collins said. “Their work wasunbelievable. Whoever was going to win todayneeded to get a couple of breaks, and we just didn’tget them.”

“I wish I could say this was a moral victory,” UKsenior Lee Baker said. “But it isn’t. This loss isgoing to hurt for a very long time.”

UK’s offensive attack had been hampered inregulation, when striker Jason Bell was ejected afterreceiving his second yellow card of the match. Thedefense was then dealt a blow just minutes beforethe game-winner, when back Rob Frey was forcedto leave the field with a leg injury.

Indiana is now 41-3 all-time in NCAA Tournament games in Bloomingtonand moves to 17-3 on the year, while UK finishes its 1999 campaign at13-7-1.
