MIAMI –
Tayshaun Prince is one of 16 players vying for a spot on the U.S.A. Young Men’s National Team that will participate in the World Championships in Brazil later this month.

Prince, a junior for the Wildcats and the squad’s leading returning scorer, made the first cut during Memorial Day weekend tryuts. Camp opened today in Miami, Fla. and the final 12-man team will be selected by the end of camp, July 16.

The United States, coached by Jim Boeheim, tips off the tournament on July 19 against Uruguay. The gold and bronze medal games will be played July 23.

Prince is one of the 13 finalists who played for a Division I university last season. One played junior college basketball and two played high school. Among the finalists are Kenny Satterfield of Cincinnati, Jason Williams, Mike Dunleavy and Carlos Boozer of Duke, Steve Blake of Maryland and Arkansas’ Joe Johnson.

The World Championship serves as a qualifying event for the 2001 FIBA World Championship to be held in Japan. Next week’s tournament features eight nations from the International Basketball Federation’s Americas Zone.
