DEKALB, Ill.-The University of Kentucky men,s soccer team won its second straight Mid-American Conference game on the road as they defeated Northern Illinois 4-1 onSunday.
The match marked the first meeting between the schools, and UK,s victory broke a 10-game unbeaten streak at home for the Huskies. Kentucky (8-3-1, 2-0) opened the scoringwhen forward Matt Wilkerson,s in-swinger off a corner kick found the net 17 minutes into the match. NIU (7-5-0, 1-2) tied to score three minutes later off a Eirik Fredericksen goal.However, the Wildcats put two more goals on the board before halftime to take a 3-1 lead. At the 36:10 mark, senior Jamie Schuer netted an 18-yard shot off assists from SeanMondelli and Scott Sersen. Just six minutes later, Mondelli assisted freshman Brent Rainey on a shot from 15 yards. UK senior Brien Baltzell closed the scoring on a penalty kickeight minutes into the second half.
Kentucky outshot the Huskies 11-6 and had seven corner kicks. UK freshman goalkeeper Brian O,Leary recorded four saves. The Cats continue conference play as they hostdefending MAC champion Bowling Green on Friday, Oct. 3, at the UK Soccer Complex in Lexington.
