CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The University ofKentucky women’s swimming team is in firstplace at the Nike Cup Invitational after twodays of competition, having posted 692points. The UK men finished day two in thirdplace in the team competition with 333points.
The star for Kentucky during day two wasundoubtedly freshman Melissa Olson. Olsonshattered the school and Nike Cup recordsin the 400 individual medley with a time of4:13.73, good enough to automaticallyqualify her for the NCAA Championship meet. Olson also swam the openingleg of UK’s first-place 800 freestyle relay team that captured the event titlewith a time of 7:26.96.
Junior Rachel Komisarz also had a strong performance for the UK women,winning the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:50.07 and swimming in the 200medley relay squad the captured second place with a mark of 1:46.02.Komisarz also swam on the victorious 800 free relay team. Ellen Strange andAnnabel Kosten both finished in the top three in the 100 butterfly, as Strangewas second with a time of 56.11, while Kosten was third in 56.66. JanieReed also finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.64.
The men were led during day two by Macon White who was second in the200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:41.01. He also swam the lead leg on theWildcat 800 freestyle relay team that was second with a mark of 6:45.47The UK women also led after day one, using three first-place finishes tocapture the top spot after Thursday’s competition. Rachel Komisarz led theway for the Wildcats as she captured first place in the 500 freestyle with atime of 4:50.33 and swam the first leg of UK’s victorious 200 freestyle relaysquad that posted a first-place time of 1:33.23. Freshman Melissa Olsonalso added a win for the Wildcats, claiming first place in the 200 individualmedley with a time of 2:02.10. The men were paced by Nat Lewis, whowon the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:25.27.
