Komisarz Wins Three Events For UK Swim Team

The University of Kentucky women’sswimming and diving team cruised tovictories over Miami (Fla.), Ohio State andOhio University while the UK men’sswimming and diving team defeated OhioUniversity Saturday at Lancaster AquaticsCenter.

The women defeated Miami (Fla.), 155-78,Ohio State, 145-92, and Ohio University,164.5-72.5. The men defeated the Bobcats188-53 but fell to Ohio State, 146.5-94.5,and Miami, 145-98. Sophomore Nat Lewishighlighted the day by setting a new school record in the 1,000-yard freestylewith a time of 9:06.97. The time broke the Lancaster Aquatics Center poolrecord in the 1,000 freestyle by more than 12 seconds.

“That was pretty impressive,” UK coach Gary Conelly said. “He’s backeddown some this season in order to save energy; but today, he got to swim ithard.” UK dominated the women’s competition, posting the top time in 12 ofthe 13 events. Junior Rachel Komisarz led the way with victories in the200-yard freestyle, 200 butterfly and the 500 freestyle. Komisarz hasalready met the NCAA automatic qualifying standard in the 200 butterfly andthe consideration standards in the 200 and 500 freestyles. Freshman MelissaOlson won two events. She met the NCAA consideration time with a time of2:04.08 in the 200 individual medley and took the 200 backstroke with atime of 2:01.76. The freshman also clocked the meet’s fastest time in the 200breaststroke (2:20.78) but swam it as an exhibition race.

“Melissa had a great meet,” Conelly said. “She went a little faster in the IMthis week and swam her best 200 breaststroke in a long time.” Sophomorefreestyler Annabel Kosten won the 50 freestyle with a NCAA considerationtime of 23.53 and the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.29. Her 100 freestyletime was a personal best. The UK women also got victories from LeighDalton in the 1,000 freestyle and the 400 medley relay. Beth Leake won thewomen’s three-meter competition with a score of 293.45.

“We dove well today,” diving coach Mike Lyden said. “Miami is one of thetop diving programs in the country and we really competed well with them.”On the men’s side, Lewis took both the 1,000 freestyle and the 500freestyle. UK also got strong performances from freshman Macon White andthe sprint freestylers.

“Macon has been a pleasant surprise,” Conelly said. “That was his best 200freestyle this year. The sprinters also were strong. Aaron Workman had agood meet and so did Jarrod Rush.”
