The University of Kentucky mens soccer team tumbled for the second consecutive game with a 2-1defeat at the hands of UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Sept. 10.
UCSB (3-1-0) scored the game-winner on a penalty kick at 83:51 when Thiago Martins, who took fiveof the Gauchos seven shots, knocked the ball just past the outstretched arms of UK goalkeeper BradSamelko. The PK resulted from a takedown by UK in the penalty box.
The Cats (2-2-0) took the upper hand in the 27th minute when Ilkka Jantti took a free kick from GiovanniFernandes and knocked the ball past the UCSB keeper for the 1-0 lead. The goal resulted when the Catsweaved around the ball before Fernandes slid it to Jantti on the left, just outside the Gauchos who were inplace for a block. Jantti kicked the ball in with little challenge for his first goal of the season and Fernandessecond assist.
Santa Barbara got the equalizer in the 75th minute on a 10-yard shot by Lucas Dalgleish, off an AaronMcAthy pass. In a crowd just outside the goal, Dalgleish took the pass and knocked it past Samelko.
The Cats hit the road again next weekend when they travel to North Carolina for the Nike CarolinaClassic. They face UNC Greensboro in the opener on Friday, Sept. 15, at 5:00 p.m., and then take on theTar Heels in the closing match on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 7:30 p.m.
