Cats Look to Continue Winning Streak
The University of Kentucky mens soccer team hosts intrastate rival Western Kentucky on Sunday, Sept. 24, at the UK SoccerComplex. Action gets underway at 2 p.m.
UK and WKU meet for the eighth time since 1991, with the Cats holding a 4-3-0 advantage. Last season, UK traveled toBowling Green, Ky., and left on the downside of a 1-0 score after claiming the three previous meetings.The Cats (3-4-0) are coming off a rousing victory over the IUPUI Jaguars on Friday, Sept. 22, in which they completely dominatedplay en route to scoring three goals in one match for the second time this season.
UK got the game-winner in the 79th minute from junior Ilkka Jantti off of one of its 13 corner kicks. The Cats were able tomaintain possession of the ball for most of the contest, outshooting the Jags 22-7.
Leading the way for the Cats this season are senior Giovani Fernandes, sophomore Chris McDaniel and Jantti, each withfive points. Jantti and McDaniel, along with senior Ryan Grady, are tied for the team lead in goals with two, and Fernandes leads thesquad with three assists.
Senior Brian OLeary is holding strong in goal having played in five of the Cats seven games. In his 455 minutes of action, hehas faced 47 shots, collecting 10 saves and surrendering six goals for a 1.19 goals-against average.
The Hilltoppers (2-5-0) come to Lexington riding a two-game winning streak. In their first five games of the season, WKU wasoutscored 12-0. The Toppers got in the win column with a 1-0 triumph over Memphis, but truly found their offense in a 6-0 rompover Kentucky Wesleyan.
WKU is led by Steven Brown and Derek OBrien. They are tied for the team lead in goals with two each, while Browns twoassists give him the top spot on the squad in assists and points. In goal, Ryan Lossie has surrendered only two goals in 180 minutes ofaction for a 1.00 GAA.
