(Oct. 2, 2000) — The University of Kentucky Athletics Association is pleased to announce that the October 7 game against South Carolina has been designated as “UK Football Breast Cancer Awareness Day” in honor of national breast cancer awareness month. The UKAA has joined forces with the McDowell Cancer Foundation, the Markey Cancer Center, the Lexington “Race for the Cure,” and the Hal Mumme Foundation in an effort to promote early detection and prevention of breast cancer.
Fans attending the game will have the opportunity to receive information about breast cancer detection, prevention, andtreatment. There will be a check presentation from the Hal Mumme Foundation to the McDowell Cancer Foundation and theMarkey Cancer Center. Organizers for the “Race for the Cure” will announce the money raised from the Sept. 30 race inLexington. There will also be a special recognition of breast cancer survivors at the game.
In addition to the game, UKAA, Dawahare’s, and Castle Sportswear will be conducting an in-store enter-to-win promotion. Thepromotion will run throughout the month of October at Dawahare’s and includes prizes such as UK-licensed Castle Sportswear,Dawahare’s gift certificates, and tickets to the Celebrity Celebration for the McDowell Cancer Foundation, which last year includeda special performance by John Michael Montgomery. The promotion also is designed to reinforce the importance of early detectionand prevention of breast cancer.
