University of Kentucky gymnast Katie Toups has been named this week’s PNC BankStudent-Athlete of the Week. Toups is a pre-medical junior majoring in biology.

Toups has several academic honors to her credit. She was named to the dean’s list in the fallof 1998 and 1999 and the spring of 1999 and 2000. She also made the athletic director’shonor roll in her first semester at UK. The Baton Rouge, La., native was named to the 2000Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll as well as being named an AcademicAll-American by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women in 1999and 2000.

Toups also has shown excellent ability in the gym. In 2000, she led the team on the unevenbars with a 9.825 average. As a freshman, she was voted “Most Improved” as she finishedthe ’99 season third on the team in the all-around with a 38.343 season average.

Toups will lead the GymKats into their first meet of the 2001 season on Friday, Jan. 12,against the eighth-ranked LSU Tigers. The meet is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. atMemorial Coliseum.
