The University of Kentucky track and field squads got off to a good start in 2001 with three individual wins on the opening night of the Rod McCravy Memorial on Friday, Jan. 12. The Kats captured first place in the women’s weight throw, the men’s high jump and the men’s weight throw.

Newcomers Aisha Smith and Bill Powers, both junior transfers from Barton Community College, each won the weight throwfor the first time. Powers took home the top spot in the 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 58-10.75, while Smith grabbed the20-pound weight throw with a season-best toss of 52-08.25. Senior Rebecca Wedel claimed third in the 20-pound event with a51-07.75 mark, breaking her personal best toss of 51-03.75 set at the Wildcat Speed Meet in December 1999.

Senior Andrew VanderWagen won the men’s high jump with a leap of 6-08.25, while sophomore Matt Smothermon tied forsecond with the same mark.

Action continues on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 10:30 a.m. with the remainder of the field events and all of the running events in theNutter Field House on the campus of the University of Kentucky.
