AUBURN, Ala. – Despite a career-high on beam by sophomore Mindy Smith, the University ofKentucky gymnastics team fell to Auburn 193.675-193.600 on Friday, Jan. 19, at Beard-EavesMemorial Coliseum on the campus of Auburn University.

It is a tough way to lose a meet, on inquiries, Coach Leah Little said. I am not sure that has happened to us before. We need to go back, practice and get ready for next week. The GymKats began competition on the uneven bars where they were led by junior Katie Toups’9.800. Junior Jessie Lemp gave UK its second-highest score with a 9.675, followed by a 9.650 byjunior Jennifer Simmons. Freshman Julie Joy rebounded from a fall in the season opener bynotching a 9.625. However, the Tigers took the lead after the first rotation.

In the second rotation, the GymKats moved on to the vault, their strongest event, andthey showed it. Junior Katie Toups stepped up first and scored a strong 9.675, but that scorewould not be needed as the remaining five gymnasts scored great than a 9.700, led bysophomore Julia Gore’s 9.800, which gave her first place in the event. Junior Jennifer Simmons’9.775 was second on the team, while freshman Julie Joy scored a career high with a 9.750 togive UK a 48.725.

Auburn and Kentucky finished even in the third rotation as each squad tallied a 48.675, AUon beam and UK on floor. Smith scored a season-high 9.800 to lead the team and the event, while Gore and Joy each tallied 9.750.

For the second consecutive meet, the final results depended on Kentucky’s beamroutines, and again it was close as two GymKats recorded falls. However, this time around, UKonly had to count one fall in scoring a 47.950, led by Smith’s career-high 9.900, her 12thconsecutive meet without a fall.

UK appeared headed to victory before inquiries on the bar routines for both teamsresulted in the Tigers taking the narrow victory.

In the all-around competition, Gore finished the night with a 38.375, coming in just behindAuburn’s Gettle, who tallied a 38.625.
