Brooke Skeen and Lauren Rookledge turned in an impressive showing for the University ofKentucky’s women’s tennis team when they captured the doubles championship at the 2001Georgia Invitational on Monday, Jan. 22.
The duo rebounded from a 5-2 deficit to defeat Zsofi Golopencza and MichaelaKratochvilova of Armstrong Atlantic 8-6 to claim the championship. This marks only thesecond tournament in which the tandem has competed together. In their first outing, the pairnotched runner-up honors at the ITA Southeast Regional Championship last November.
Skeen also brought home the consolation singles title by besting Simone Kung of Illinois 7-5,6-4. The squad’s lone senior rebounded from a second-round loss to breeze through theconsolation bracket without dropping a set.
This was an excellent day for this squad, Coach Mark Guilbeau said. Brooke has playedin several championship matches and it is great for her to finally get a title. I am happy forthis team, not because they won, but because they deserved to win.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 27, for their dual match opener. They willtake on Louisville at 10 a.m. and Cincinnati at 4 p.m. at the Hilary J. Boone Indoor TennisCenter.
