The 11th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers used a singles slate which boasts five ranked players to overpower the University ofKentucky men’s tennis team in the Wildcats’ third Southeastern Conference road trip of the season. The Vols grabbed the 4-0 win afternotching the doubles points and taking three singles wins at the Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tenn., on Wednesday, March28.
The Cats (7-11, 1-4 SEC) fell behind early in doubles as the duo of Paul Podbury and Mario Toledo knocked out UK’s JohanGrunditz and Reven Stephens at the No. 1 position, while the 12th-ranked team of Adam Carey and Mark Parsons guaranteed thedoubles point for UT when it took out the newly-formed Cat tandem of Edo Bawono and Karim Benmansour.
In singles play, 49th-ranked Bawono suffered a tough loss to No. 80 Parsons in straight sets, while Peter Handoyo, the nation’s33rd-ranked player, took out Matt Emery to put Tennessee up 3-0. The Vols solidified the win when 74th-ranked Podbury took outGustav Pousette at the No. 5 position.
The Cats return to action on Friday, March 30, when they return home to play host to SEC-rival Ole Miss. The Rebels are currentlyranked 12th in the nation. Action gets underway at 6 p.m. at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.
