(Mar. 31, 2001) — The University of Kentucky men’s golf team jumped four spots in the final round of competition to take fifth place in the Johnny Owens Invitational at Kearney Hills Golf Links on Saturday, March 31.
The Wildcats were led by senior Wes Furnish who played to an even par finish that was good enough to land him in a tie for fourth place for the three-round tournament. Furnish, a Cynthiana, Ky., native, finished the two-day event with a 216.
Miami University took the 2001 Johnny Owens Invitational title with their tournament record team score of 866. Miami’s Adam Speirs walked away with medalist honors as he led the Redhawks with his record setting individual score 9-under par 207.
Other UK scores included sophomore Andy Dustman in a tie for 36th place with a 226, senior Pat Kelly with a 228, Ryan Wilson with a 229 and John Beckett with a 230.
The Cats will be back in action on April 6-7 when they travel to the Marshall University Invitational.
