Despite plating four runs in the top of the ninth inning, the University of Kentuckybaseball teams comeback effort fell short, as the Wildcats fell to the Miami UniversityRedhawks 11-10 on Wednesday afternoon at McKie Field in Oxford, Ohio.
The one-run loss was UKs fourth in its last five games and dropped the Cats record to15-21 on the season. The win was Miamis second straight and improved theRedhawks to 15-17 on the campaign.
Caleb Brock led UK offensively, going 4-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and four runsscored. Morgan Embry collected three hits and drove in three runs while Seth Morrissmashed his team-leading 10th home run in the contest.
Jason and Justin Knoedler led the Redhawks going a combined 4-for-7 with two homeruns and five RBI.
Miami jumped on UK starter Rob Corrado with five runs in the first inning. Corradostruggled with his control, issuing three hits and three bases on balls before beingreplaced by Scott Wade in the first inning.
UK chipped away with two runs in the second inning. Brocks double to the right-centerfield gap plated Morris, who has led off the inning with a single. Cory Hahn followed witha bloop single just out of the reach of the Redhawk first baseman, bring Brock around toscore.
The Redhawks would tack on four additional runs in the third with the big blow comingon a two run homer from Jasoon Knoedler. After the next Miami batter reached on asingle, Clark Mace took a Mark Galvin deliver over the fence to put MU up 9-2.
Again, UK battled back with two runs in the fourth on back-to-back home runs by Brockand Embry. The back-to-back long balls marked the first time that UK player had doneso all season.
The two teams would trade runs in the fifth and Miami, leaving the score at 10-5 in favorof the home-standing Redhawks.
Morris homer in the seventh cut MUs lead to four, but Justin Knoedler would answerwith a round-tripper of his own in the eighth.As they have done all season, the Cats battled back in the ninth. Vince Harrison led offwith a double down the right field line. Gordon Tyler reached base on an error, scoringHarrison and bringing the hot-hitting Brock to the plate. After Brock walked, Morrisreached on another error by the MU shortstop, his third of the game, moving Brock tosecond, Tyler to third. Embry followed with an RBI single, loading the bases again.Pinch hitter Spencer Preston ground out, but drove in another run, cutting the UK deficitto 11-9. Austin Madison followed with an RBI groundout of his own. However, with thetying run at second, Redhawk closer Chris Leonard got Beau Moore to ground out tosecond, ending the Cats comeback.
Corrado suffered the loss for UK, falling to 5-5 on the year. Shawn Landis picked up thewin for Miami.
The Cats will return to action this Friday when the Vanderbilt Commodores visitLexington for a three-game Southeastern Conference series. Fridays game isscheduled to start at 6 p.m., while Saturday and Sundays game will get underway at 2p.m.
