Freshman RHP Mark Galvin tossed six innings, allowing only five hits and two earned runs and freshman infielder Spencer Graeter belted his first collegiate grand slam in leading the Kentucky Wildcats to a 14-5 victory over Morehead State on Tuesday night at Cliff Hagan Stadium.

All of UK starters collected at least one base hit, as the Wildcats out-hit the Eagles 17-8 in improving to 20-29 on the season. Morehead State fell to 18-30.

Spencer Preston and Morgan Embry led UK in the hit column, each going 3-for-5 on the night. Graeter, Vince Harrison, and Seth Morris also recorded multiple hit games.Harrison got the Cats off to a good start in the first inning, connecting on his eighth home run of the season, in the process, driving home Beau Moore who had tripled to lead off the inning.

After MSU plated a run in the top-half of the fourth, the Cats bats came alive. Embry led off with a single and advanced to second on a fielding error by the Eagle center fielder. Morris hit an opposite-field single, moving Embry to third. Caleb Brock followed with an RBI single to center, plating Embry and moving Morris to third. After MSU made a pitching change, Brock swiped second. Cory Hahn, another Wildcat freshman, laced the fourth single of the inning through to center field, scoring Morris and Brock. Austin Madison continued the UK hit parade with another single. Moore then walked, loading the bases for Graeter. Graeter then smacked his first grand slam, third home run of the season, over the right field wall, giving the Wildcats a 9-2 lead.

The Eagles manufacture their second run in the sixth before the UK bats would come calling again in the bottom half with Preston and Embry each picking up an RBI.

Will Renaker’s homer in the eighth scored the third MSU run, but once again, UK would respond with three run in the bottom of the inning. MSU would plate two runs in the ninth to make the final score 14-5.

Galvin (1-0) picked up the win, his first as a collegian. Mark Michael, Jarrod Reynolds and Joel Gooch each pitched effectively out of the UK bullpen.

Shawn Hall (0-5) suffered the loss for MSU. Hall was touched for six hits and five earned runs in only three innings of work. Lexington native Casey Gilvin led Morehead State with three hits on the night.

UK’s next game will be on Friday, May 5, when the Wildcats travel to Columbia, S.C., to battle the South Carolina Gamecocks in a three-game Southeastern Conference series.
