Just one day after earning All-America status with a second round win at the 2001 NCAA Doubles Championships, the 29th-ranked duo of Carolina Mayorga and Sarah Witten were knocked out of the tournament with a quarterfinal loss to Baylor’s Katja Kovac and Jahnavi Parakh, 7-5, 6-4, in Stone Mountain, Ga.”At this level, matches always come down to one or two points, which was the case today,” Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “This experience has done so much for Carolina and Sarah, as well as the whole team, and it really serves as a reminder to all of us of how well we can do.”
On Wednesday, the pair, which entered the tournament as the first alternate, took out Fresno State’s Simone Jardim and Kim Niggemeyer to advance to the Elite Eight, earning them All-America honors. They became only the second doubles team in school history to earn the recognition. Sonia Hahn, now head coach of the Tennessee women’s tennis team, and Tamaka Takagi earned the honor in 1987 and again in 1988.
This ends the season for UK’s No. 2 doubles team with a 26-13 (.667) record.
