– NASHVILLE, Tenn.-The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team had a successful day in the opening round of the June Stewart Invitational at Vanderbilt University on Friday, Oct. 19.
In singles action, junior Carolina Mayorga overpowered Jessica Johnson of Marshall in two sets for a 7-5, 6-2 victory. Sophomore Amy Trefethen won her first set, 6-4, before dropping in the second set to Marshall’s Anna Mitten. Trefethen came back in the third set to defeat Mitina 6-4 and earn the victory. Fellow teammate, Jill Buckley also competed in a tough three sets for a victory over Shawna Zuccarni of Purdue, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.Sophomores Sarah Witten and Shannon Stafford and freshman Danielle Petrisko dominated their matches to each earn a victory.
The Wildcats suffered three losses in singles action today. Sophomore Leigh Bradwell dropped the match against Purdue’s Laura Burgarello, 6-2, 6-1, while freshman Whitney Collins won her first set, 6-2, before dropping the final two sets. Junior Lauren Rookledge won her second set, 7-5, against Vanderbilt’s Kelly Schmnadt to tie the match at one a piece before Rookledge was overpowered in the final set by Schmnadt.
Kentucky dominated the doubles action and went undefeated after two rounds to advance to the finals. The duos of Mayorga and Witten and Trefethen and Buckley breezed into the semifinals with 8-1 victories in the first round. Mayorga and Witten advanced to the Flight one finals after defeating Alix Lacelarie and Laurence Jayet of Clemson, while Trefethen and Buckley qualified for the Flight three championship.. Rookledge and Bradwell had tough competition in Penn State’s team of Janelle Perez and Megan Martin in the first round with an 8-5 victory. The duo earned another tough victory to advance to the finals of flight two.
The doubles championships will take place after the semifinals in singles action on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Brownlee O. Currey, Jr Tennis Complex. The first match is set to begin at 9 a.m.
