Oct. 27, 2001

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men’s basketball team participated in the annual Blue-White intrasquad scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Memorial Coliseum. The Blue squad, led by sophomore guard Gerald Fitch’s 31 points and 14 rebounds, defeated the White team 109-92.

Coached by assistant David Hobbs, the Blue team shot 54.4% from the field including 38% from 3-point range. Senior captain Tayshaun Prince finished the game with 20 points and eight rebounds while sophomore Erik Daniels had a game-high seven assists from his forward position.

The White squad, coached by assistant Mike Sutton, was led by junior guard Keith Bogans who scored 25 points and seven rebounds while junior center Jules Camara scored 16 and blocked three shots. Junior Marvin Stone scored 14 points on six of seven shooting from the floor.

Daniels, senior J.P. Blevins and junior Marquis Estill all scored 16 points for the Blue, while Bogans, Camara, Stone, sophomore Cliff Hawkins and freshman Chuck Hayes all finished in double figures for White.

The Wildcats will play an exhibition against Nike Elite on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Rupp Arena. Tickets will go on sale for both UK exhibitions beginning Thursday, Nov. 1. QUOTES

102701smith1.jpg
Coach Tubby Smith

On game:
“I thought today’s game was a really good game, I thought we had great crowd and I appreciate all the fans coming out to see our guys play. As you can see, I’m pretty excited about this group and you can see why I’m excited about them. Gerald (Fitch) played with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. He made a lot of shots. We had good balance from both teams although the White team got behind and did not respond with the defensive aggressiveness that I thought they needed to respond with.”

On returning players:
“Tayshaun (Prince) made some big shots and having Jules (Camara) back was good – he looked pretty sharp today after being off most of the week. Even though Keith (Bogans) started a little slow, he picked it up and played a lot better. I thought Marvin really did a good especially shooting the ball.”

On freshmen:
“We need to get them more aggressive but Josh (Carrier) shot the ball when he had the opportunity and shot it well. Chuck (Hayes) did a good job today and Rashaad (Carruth) struggled from outside but we’re trying to get him to understand he needs to play at both ends of the court – when you’re not playing well offensively you can do it at the defensive end.”

On Erik Daniels:
“Erik played unbelievably well today, in fact, if I had to say who gave us the most on the court it would be Erik for his balance and consistency today. He is such an unorthodox player because he’s tricky – he has the ball fakes and head shakes, he can get you off balance and score. He finds people that are open, has nice hands, great vision and has the ability to make the play – he really helped himself a lot.”

On indication of play in practice:
“Yes, the competition is there at every position. That’s been healthy for us because we are getting better as a team because of that competition.”

On development of team’s personality:
“It takes time. It’s not quite there yet, although teams personalities are usually extensions of the coaches. They’re still learning because we are still relatively young but at the same time we’re more experienced than last year. Guys like Daniels and Fitch have a better understanding of how we want to play aggressively attacking offensively and defensively.”

102701smith2.jpgOn starting lineup:
“I don’t even worry about that, that’s the last thing I worry about. I want guys playing and executing fundamentally, pressuring the ball, doing the little things. If we get everyone on the same page and executing our system the right way, it won’t matter who you plug in. We’re a versatile team and defining roles for the guys will take time.”

On Gerald Fitch:
“I thought he and Erik demonstrated the style of play that I like to coach and want my team playing, playing aggressively, especially defensively. We have guys that can score points in Keith and Tayshaun and guys that bring people down in transition with Cliff (Hawkins) and J.P. (Blevins). Now we have to really believe and trust the other parts of our game. I was disappointed we didn’t get on the floor – I don’t remember anybody getting a loose ball today. Those are the things that stick out in my mind and we’ll get better at that.”

On pressure of expectations for season:
“We expect to be the best team we can possibly be and I don’t think anyone’s expectations are any higher than ours. We know what it takes. It takes a lot of work and it takes a lot of sacrifice. We’re happy and elated to be considered one of the top teams in the country and I know we are. Now it’s time for us to practice like champions. That’s what we’re trying to instill in our guys – that level of intensity that they have to come with everyday if they expect to win championships and I know we’re capable of doing that.”

Guard J.P. Blevins

On the play of the team:
“There were a lot of points scored out there today, but you could definitely tell it was the preseason. We ran up and down the court and didn’t play much half-court offense and guys got tired easily.”

On the play of Gerald Fitch:
“Gerald has great basketball instincts. He has a knack for this game. He has a great all-around game and is the best rebounder for his size that I have ever seen. The biggest jump you have to make in college basketball is from your freshman to sophomore year. He has made that jump.”

On the play of Erik Daniels:
“I heard a rumor before the season that Erik Daniels might be redshirted. We would never do that because we need a guy like Erik on this team. He brings so much energy to the court. The guys kid him about his ‘old school’ game, but he gets the job done.”

102701boganspress.jpg
Guard Keith Bogans

On the teams talent:
“There are plenty of weapons on this team. My freshman year we played seven guys. This year we have 15 guys who can contribute. We have returned a lot of talent and with the younger guys helping out we have a great team.”

On his leadership:
“I have to be a more vocal player. I have to be a leader. I want to help these young guys. The freshmen on this team can really help us out this season, but first have to help them learn.”

On the game:
“I struggled in the first part of the game and missed my first couple shots badly. But I’ve learned to move on from stuff like that and I was able to get on a roll in the second half.”

102701fitchpress.jpg
Guard Gerald Fitch

On the potential for starting:
“I haven’t been guaranteed that I will or won’t start. So that’s the way I approach practice. I go in and give it all I’ve got trying to earn a starting position.”

102701princepress.jpg
Forward Tayshaun Prince

On depth:
“We have so many guys at each position it gives the starters a chance to rest and it wouldn’t be a let-down at all with the other guys in there.”

Forward Erik Daniels

On his game:
“I feel a lot more comfortable this year. I am more willing to play my game because the coaches know what I am capable of and I can be more calm on the court.”

On his knack for passing the ball:
“I think the best part of my game is passing. I would rather pass the ball than score.”
