FARMERS BRANCH, Texas– Jesse Witten, the only freshman on the University of Kentucky men’s tennis team, advanced to the second round of the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships. Witten grabbed a victory in the opening round against Danny Westerman of Wisconsin.
Witten dropped his first set against Westerman, 3-6, before battling back, 7-6, 6-3, in the final sets. Earlier in the fall schedule Witten had defeated Westerman in straight sets during the first round of the All-American Championships. Today’s victory against Westerman leads Witten to the second round where he will compete against Andy Leber of Texas-Arlington, whom he also met and defeated in the All-American Championships during the third round.
Action between Witten and Leber is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 9, at the Brookhaven Country Club. If victorious, Witten will advance to the quarterfinals set to begin after the second round.
