LEXINGTON, Ky.-The University of Kentucky rifle team defeated Murray State, 6208-6193, on Sunday, Nov. 11, extended their season record to 5-0. The Wildcats entered the last twenty shots of smallbore kneeling being down six points.

Kentucky was victorious in air rifle action with a score of 1561 against Murray State’s 1555. In smallbore, UK tallied wins in the prone and kneeling portions but were defeated 1520-1505 in the standing portion.

Sophomore Bradley Wheeldon took first place honors in smallbore competition with a combined score of 1169. Freshman Aaron Shader followed shortly behind with a 1163 in forth place. Fellow wildcat James Nash re-wrote Kentucky’s record books with a score of 398 in air rifle competition grabbing first place. The score also tallies Nash’s personal career best in the competition.

“We just ran out of energy towards the end of the match,” Coach Harry Mullins said. Shooting two full courses and air rifle within a two-day period can take a lot out of a team. They definitely worked very hard for today’s end result.”

The Wildcats began their weekend with a victory over Nebraska on Saturday, Nov. 10. The team’s next match will take place on Sunday, Nov. 18 as they play host to Alaska- Fairbanks.
