The University of Kentucky rifle team grabbed a first-place finish at the NCAA Sectionals on Feb. 9-10. The Wildcats finished with a total 6211, grabbing top scores in both the smallbore and air rifle competitions. The UK White Squad finished fifth with a 5985.

Leading the Cats, Bradley Wheeldon took first place overall in smallbore action with a 1176 while finishing fifth in air rifle. Sophomore James Nash finished the air rifle competition with a 393 to take overall first place. Freshman Aaron Shader grabbed third place in smallbore action with 1171.The White Squad was led by Jeff Hamberg in smallbore with 1160 and Lindsey Meagher in air rifle with 381.

“I am very proud of this team,” Coach Harry Mullins said. “With the score that we had, I feel we have a strong chance at making it to the NCAA’s.”

The Wildcats will find out their NCAA chances on Feb. 26, when all scores have to be turned in to head officials, but until then they will focus on a Feb. 16 match up against Jacksonville State at Buell Armory on the UK campus.
