Junior Rob Corrado pitched a season-high 6.2 innings, walking only one and striking out a career-high eight batters, but the University of Kentucky baseball team failed at the plate, falling to the Bisons of Lipscomb, 6-2, at Cliff Hagan Stadium on Tuesday, April 16. The Wildcats (14-21) committed four errors in the game, while scoring only two runs behind four hits on the night.

The Bisons (18-19) got on the scoreboard early, with senior Matt Candler’s two-run home run in the top of the second inning. The shot over left field wall also drove in fellow senior Jeremy George, who had reached second on a misplayed ball by right-fielder Mike Ferris.

With two out in the fourth, Lipscomb struck again. With runners on the corners, freshman Todd Boucher got two bases off a drive to right center, scoring both George and Candler. After George reached on a single down the right field line, Candler was hit by a pitch from Corrado to reach base for the second time of the night.

Bison pitcher Logan Good (3-3) was perfect on the mound until the bottom of the fourth. After senior Robert Newton singled up the middle, recording the first Wildcat hit on the night, Good’s walk to junior Gordon Tyler gave the Cats a runner in scoring position for the first time in the game. Ferris’ hit off the right field wall scored Newton, reducing the Bison lead to three, 4-1. UK’s only other score of the game came in the fifth, when sophomore Caleb Stewart’s sacrifice fly to center scored freshman Jesse Barber.

After allowing two more runs in the seventh, Corrado (0-2) was relieved by senior left-hander Bryan Felkel to finish the inning. Felkel, who pitched the remainder of the game, retired four straight batters and did not allow a hit or run in 2.1 innings of work.

With the loss, Kentucky moves to 1-4 all-time versus Lipscomb since beginning the series in 1971. The Cats and Bisons have not met on the diamond since 1973.

UK will take another break from SEC action tomorrow, hosting intrastate rival Western Kentucky at 6 p.m. ET. Freshman Craig Snipp (3-2, 5.51 ERA) will get his sixth career start, while WKU has not announced a starter for tomorrow’s contest.
